Pre-k students at Shields Elementary welcomed Victoria Fire Department on campus to learn about community workers and fire safety.
Students have been studying community workers that help citizens. The visit allowed students to be introduced to one type of community worker in an interactive and engaging manner.
VISD schools have also participated in Fire Prevention Week, which was October 9-15. โFire wonโt wait. Plan your escape.โ was the theme for this year, aiming at educating everyone about simple but important actions you can take to keep yourself and those around you safe from home fires. Pre-k students have been practicing fire safety procedures such as stop, drop, roll, and fire drills.
Students were shown the equipment on a fire truck and learned how it's used. Students saw how the aerial ladder on a fire truck is operated and even how high it can go on Quint 2 from Station #2.
So that students arenโt afraid of firefighters in โbunker gearโ or โturnout gear,โ which is the protective clothing worn by firefighters, students were able to see the multiple layers a firefighter wears to stay safe.
About the visit, Shields student Adalyn said, โIt was good because I saw the ladder, and it went up tall!โ and student Paizley said, โI liked the ladder that goes really tall, and I liked inside the ambulance.โ
Accompanying Quint 2 was an emergency medical services (EMS) vehicle, which students were able to take a tour of. Paramedics showed students the different parts inside the EMS vehicle and other features.
โIt was amazing to see the different community workers and explore their tools,โ said Pre-K teacher Gisel Wyble. โEven as an adult, I loved going inside the ambulance and seeing how the stretchers and truck ladders work.โ
