SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

The Victoria ISD Education Foundation works with community partners to offer scholarships to VISD graduating seniors who plan to enroll in institutions of higher education for further studies. Scholarship awards are forwarded to the college/university of the student’s choice upon enrollment.

VISD offers scholarships for students with a variety of skills and interests.  Review the list below and check the scholarship criteria thoroughly before applying.

For Victoria ISD graduating seniors who intend to be Education majors
Sponsored by family and friends of Jenica Leigh Edge Barnard

Award amount: $1,500

Jenica Leigh Edge Barnard was born in 1994. She attended VISD schools and graduated from Victoria East High School in 2012. In May of 2016, Jenica graduated from Texas State University with honors and started her first job teaching second graders in Llano. Unfortunately, coming home from school, her precious life was cut short due to a car accident. Her 22 years of life graced the world with laughter, love, and a gentle spirit that blessed all she touched. She used her gifts to grow her students educationally and as lifelong learners.

The Jenica Leigh Edge Barnard Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 to honor her vibrant life and continue the passion she possessed to educate students.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • plans to be an Education major,
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 85 or better,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year?

If you answered yes to the above criteria, you are eligible to apply for the Jenica Leigh Edge Barnard Memorial Scholarship in 2018.

Barnhart.jpgEdith Barnhart Master Teacher Scholarship
For Honors/AP students participating in Extracurricular Activities
Sponsored by the by Victoria ISD Education Foundation and the O’Connor & Hewitt Foundation

Award amount: $500

The Master Teacher Scholarship is named after a VISD teacher with 10 or more years teaching experience who has had a significant influence on his or her students. Mrs. Barnhart, a chemistry teacher at Victoria High School for over thirty-five years, was named VISD Master Teacher in 1999.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • completed at least four Honors/Pre-AP/AP classes during high school,
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 90 or better,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year, and
  • participated in a minimum of two extracurricular activities?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the Edith Barnhart Master Teacher Scholarship.

Cade.jpgHarold Cade Honorary Scholarship
For VISD Graduating Seniors who are former Cade Middle School Students
Sponsored by: Harold Cade and Cade Middle School Parent Teacher Organization

Award amount: $500

Harold Cade devoted a total of 42 years to Texas public education. He was appointed principal of Patti Welder Middle School in 1973, a position he held until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Cade has been active in many civic organizations including Kiwanis Club of Victoria, NAACP, Minority Business Alliance, Making the Grade Victoria, Salvation Army of Victoria, Victoria YMCA, and the Civilian Police Academy Alumni Association.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • attended all of the 8th grade at Cade Middle School,
  • earned a four-year high school cumulative average of 90 or better,
  • participated in a minimum of one extracurricular or co-curricular activity,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year, and
  • had no more than three unexcused absences or tardies per semester during senior year?

If you answered yes to all of the above criteria, you are eligible to apply for the Harold Cade Honorary Scholarship.

Conchola.jpgAlyssa Conchola Memorial Scholarship
For Participants in the Communities in Schools Program
Sponsored by Drs. Harish and Manju Chandna and the late Mr. Shivram Chandna

Award amount: $750

Alyssa Conchola, who is memorialized through this scholarship, was a VISD student who attended Stroman Middle School. She passed away in July 2014 at the age of 13. Alyssa was a vibrant young lady who liked to skate, dance, spend time with her friends, and could often be found playing with her two little sisters. She was involved in the Communities In Schools program and would have been a 7th grade Stroman Viper.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • participated in the Communities in Schools program for at least one year,
  • can demonstrate financial need, and
  • earned four-year cumulative average of 80 or better?

For Graduating Seniors Planning to Major in Education
Sponsored by the Victoria ISD Education Foundation, H-E-B & William and Madeline Smith Foundation

Award amount: $500

The Master Teacher Scholarship is named after a VISD teacher with 10 or more years teaching experience and who has had a significant influence on his/her students. Mrs. Klinkerman is the lead facilitator at F. W. Gross Montessori Magnet School and has taught for twenty-four years—nineteen of which have been in VISD. She was selected a VISD Master Teacher in 2001. Mrs. Klinkerman states “I teach because there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a concept grasped and the excitement in the child’s eye.”

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • plans to major in Education,
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 90 or better,
  • completed at least two charitable projects significant to your school and/or community,
  • participated in at least one extracurricular activity (and was a part of this activity for at least three years),
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year, and
  • had no more than three absences and/or three tardies per semester in your senior year?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the Juli Klinkerman Master Teacher Scholarship.

ledbetter.jpgOrby C. Ledbetter Honorary Scholarship
For Graduating Seniors who have demonstrated service to the community
Sponsored by the Victoria Veteran's Service Organizations

Award amount: $1,000

The Orby C. Ledbetter Honorary Scholarship is named after a former prisoner of war who served in the US Army 36th Division during World War II.  In September 1943, Ledbetter's division was sent to the beaches of Salerno, Italy, where he was captured and taken to a prisoner of war camp in Munich. After months of starvation and forced labor, he and ten members of his platoon escaped when the Russians arrived to liberate the German camp.  This scholarship honors Mr. Ledbetter's determination, perseverance, and service to his community and his country.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • earned a four-year cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better,
  • completed at least two charitable projects significant to your school and/or community,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year, and
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the Orby C. Ledbetter Scholarship. Children of veterans are encouraged to apply.

Middleton.jpgL.C. Middleton Memorial Scholarship
For Graduating Seniors demonstrating achievement in Academic Performance, Conduct, and Charitable Work
Sponsored by the Victoria ISD Education Foundation

Award amount: $500

Mr. L. C. Middleton, who is memorialized through this scholarship, worked for the Victoria Independent School District. He passed away suddenly in March 2002 at the age of 57. His positions at VISD included serving as a teacher at Crain Middle School and a principal at Howell Middle School. Prior to his death in the fall of 2001, Mr. Middleton was selected the Region III Secondary Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary Supervisors and Principals. He was quoted at that time saying, “Every child has the ability to make something of themselves if they put their minds to it.” Mr. Middleton gave 35 years of his life to ensuring and cultivating a positive and well‐rounded education for youth. 

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • completed at least two charitable projects significant to your school and/or community,
  • participated in at least one extracurricular activity (for at least three years),
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 85 or better,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year, and
  • had no more than three absences and/or three tardies per semester in your senior year?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the L.C. Middleton Memorial Scholarship.

BobMoore.jpgBob Moore Honorary Scholarship
For VISD Graduating Seniors in the Career and Technical Education Program who plan to attend VC or UHV
Sponsored by Victoria ISD Employees, the community of Victoria, and the Victoria ISD Education Foundation

Award amount: $500

Mr. Bob Moore is a beloved former superintendent and administrator of the Victoria Independent School District. Mr. Moore announced he would leave the district following 42 years of education service in June 2012. Under his six-year leadership at Victoria ISD, Mr. Moore overhauled the district through a leadership model of assessment and goal-setting and has led an unprecedented bond election for the construction of two new high schools, a middle school, two elementary schools, a fine arts center and an aquatics center. His service to VISD, students and staff, as well as the community of Victoria is honored through this scholarship.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • took courses in the Career and Technical Education Program,
  • plans to attend Victoria College or University of Houston-Victoria,
  • can demonstrate financial need, and
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 80 or better?

If you answered yes to all of the above criteria, you are eligible to apply for the Bob Moore Honorary Scholarship.

Slone.jpgDr. Joyce Slone Master Teacher Scholarship
For Graduating Seniors Participating in Charitable Projects and Fine Arts
Sponsored by the Victoria ISD Education Foundation, HEB & William and Madeline Smith Foundation

Award amount: $500

The Master Teacher Scholarship is named after a VISD teacher with 10 or more years teaching experience and who has had a significant influence on his/her students. Dr. Slone, a Government/Economics and Psychology/Sociology Teacher at Stroman High School for over thirty-two years, was named the 2000 VISD Master Teacher. Dr. Slone states that “education is a life-long process. I did not receive my doctorate until I was 51 years old.”

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • completed at least four charitable projects significant to your school and/or community,
  • participated in two extracurricular activities (at least one must be in Fine Arts),
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 85 or better,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year, and
  • had no more than three absences and/or three tardies per semester in your senior year?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the Dr. Joyce Slone Master Teacher Scholarship.

For VISD Graduating Seniors who participated in the Bilingual and English-As-Second-Language Program
Education Program who plan to attend VC or UHV Sponsored by family and friends of Dr. Martha A. Zuniga

Award amount: $500

Dr. Martha A. Zuniga, who is memorialized through this scholarship, worked for the Victoria Independent School District. She passed away in August 2012 at the age of 61. Dr. Zuniga served as the Bilingual/ESL Coordinator for Victoria ISD, a position she was passionate about until her retirement in June 2012.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • participated in the Bilingual/ESL Program and
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 80 or better?

If you answered yes to the above criteria, you are eligible to apply for the Dr. Martha A. Zuniga Memorial Scholarship.

For VISD Graduating Student Athletes
Sponsored by the VISD Education Foundation and the Bhatia Family

Award amount: $1,000

The VISD Education Foundation has partnered with the Bhatia Family of Victoria to provide a college/university scholarship to a VISD senior athlete.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • lettered in a VISD athletic program,
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 85 or better,
  • received no conduct grade below a B during senior year,
  • received no discipline referrals during senior year, and
  • had no more than three unexcused absences or tardies per semester during senior year?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the Athlete of the Year Scholarship.

For Student Leader Participants
Sponsored by the Victoria ISD Employees, the community of Victoria, and the Victoria ISD Education Foundation

Award amount: $500

VISD established the Student Leadership Program in 2006 to support the district and community in developing the strategic plan and goals for the future of VISD. Since VISD began this program, student leaders have had training workshops focused on developing leadership skills and opportunities to serve the district in a variety of ways to demonstrate their student leadership expertise.

Are you a VISD graduating senior who

  • participated in the Student Leader program,
  • earned a four-year cumulative average of 80 or better,
  • participated in a minimum of two extracurricular or co-curricular activities, and
  • will be attending a two- or four-year college or university?

If you answered yes, you are eligible to apply for the Student Leader Honorary Scholarship.
